Stainless steel serveware is a great investment because it is much more durable and easier to care for than silver or silver plated utensils, but it still adds a classy touch to events over plastic serving pieces. Even though it is easier to care for than silver, there are some cleaning directions for care and upkeep of stainless steel utensils that should be followed if you want to keep your stainless looking bright and new. First off, never soak your stainless in water with other metals. In fact, it’s best not to soak the metal unless absolutely necessary. Never use abrasive cleaner materials when washing the utensils. Chemicals like bleach or ammonia can cause irreparable damage to the stainless finish.
When you wash your utensils, use a soft cloth or sponge to clean off any debris using warm, soapy water. To keep the finish looking its best try not to store the utensils in bowls with acidic liquids such as citrus or vinegar. The acids break down the finish and can actually cause premature pitting or staining.
