MEANING OF THE GREEN SEAL
The Green Seal on packaging or promotional material signifies that a product is "environmentally preferable," meaning it is better for the environment than the majority of products in its class, and that it works as well as or better than similar conventional products.
Developing Fair Standards
Green Seal's standard-setting process is open and transparent to guarantee its objectivity and fairness. To begin, Green Seal relies on scientific testing by partners like the Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Each new standard is subject for review by manufacturers, universities, environmental groups, trade associations and members of the government and the public. After a standard is established, it continues to be regularly updated and remains open to formal appeals.
About Green Seal®
Green Seal is a non-profit organization that promotes environmental responsibility. Since 1992, Green Seal has been providing scientifically based third-party certifications for “environmentally preferable” products, facilities and services. The Green Seal standard relies on a life-cycle approach that tests and evaluates the entire process of a product’s creation and disposal to ensure that little to no harm is being done to the environment.

Why Green Seal is Trustworthy
Green Seal’s standard-setting process is scientifically based and follows the guidelines of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The Green Seal has become an acknowledged standard for the practices of government agencies. Green Seal has even helped the ISO and EPA develop guidelines for legitimizing third-party standards and certifications.
Qualifying Products
Any product with a corresponding standard is eligible for certification. Green Seal offers certification in many categories, with a focus on janitorial and furnishing products and services. The following products are useful in the food service industry and have corresponding Green Seal standards:
  • Cleaners
  • Paper towels and napkins
  • Compact fluorescent lamps
  • Food service packaging
  • Occupancy sensors
  • Hand soaps
  • Paints, coatings and floor products
  • Windows
  • Window films
  • Food grade paper
  • Electric chillers
GREENING YOUR COVERNMENT
Through the "Greening Your Government Program," Green Seal helps local, state and federal governments that wish to adopt eco-friendly policies and activities. Green Seal provides governments with specific product recommendations, implementation guidelines and cost estimates.
The CEE Certification
Product Certification Process
Green Seal uses the following process to certify products:
  • The manufacturer of the product must first submit an application.
  • The product itself is evaluated and tested.
  • Green Seal visits the manufacturing plant to ensure that the fabrication process also meets the necessary standards.
  • Green Seal continues to annually evaluate the product to verify that it continues to meet the original or revised standards.

The Global Ecolabeling Network
Developed and founded by Green Seal and the Canadian eco-labeling program Environmental Choice, the Global Ecolabeling Network consists of organizations that offer certifications for environmentally responsible products and services. The network helps establish international standards for eco-labeling and follows the guidelines and principles developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
