This light-duty ice machine is great for home use and use in small offices because if you do not have a floor drain, you can get a plumber to install a sump pump. It makes 52 pounds of ice every 24 hours and has 25 pounds of storage, making it ideal for small kitchens. One thing to keep in mind is that you should probably have a Manitowoc contractor install this machine, or else get someone you are positive knows what they are doing, because any problems caused by poor installation are not covered under warranty if you do not use one of Manitowoc’s people. It makes “shot glass ice” which is bigger ice that is shaped like a shot glass. The potential disadvantage of this style of ice is that it is not very chewable; if that is a quality you are looking for in ice. However, these cubes will melt slowly and looks fantastic in rocks glasses. If you pride yourself on your high-class home bar or if you enjoy high end scotch or other liquors, this ice machine is a must have.

Q: What size ice cubes does this machine produce? Can you describe "octagonal" ice cubes, I am unfamiliar with that term?
A: The ice cubes produced by the Manitowoc (SM-50A) - 53 Lb Self-Contained Cube Ice Machine are octagonal, which are slightly bigger than a standard cube and shaped like a shot glass or top hat. The diameter of the cubes is approximately 1 ¼” and they are approximately 1 1/8” tall. The octagonal ice cubes melt slowly and look very unique in cocktails.

Q: Is the door on this unit reversible? Is there a drain pump included with the ice machine? How should the evaporator be cleaned and how often?
A: The door on this Manitowoc 53 Lb Self-Contained Cube Ice Machine (SM-50A) from the SM 50 Series is not reversible. A drain pump is not included for the ice machine, but one is available from FSW. Manitowoc recommends that the evaporator on this self-contained machine be cleaned every six months. To clean the evaporator, simply mix 16 ounces of the Manitowoc cleaner (also available from FSW) with a gallon of water then put this mixture in a spray bottle and spray the evaporator. Then scrub the evaporator with a nylon bristle brush. There are detailed instructions on how to clean the evaporator included on this Manitowoc machine.

Q: The door is not reversible. However, can it be purchased to open from the opposite side?
A: You are correct. While the door of the Manitowoc (SM-50A) - 53 Lb Self-Contained Cube Ice Machine - SM 50 Series is not reversible the manufacturer's spec sheet states that "Unit ships with hinge on right, easily changed to left during installation." Therefore the door should be able to be adjusted to open from the opposite side.

Q: Can this unit be purchased with a black front?

"Works well. No real problems. I wish that the size of the ice cubes was smaller. We use ice in many blended drinks and the large cubes are hard on the blender. I like the compact size. It is short enough to fit comfortably under the counter. The stainless steel construction on the front and sides makes it easy to clean. The size of the scoop provided with the ice maker is a little too small for the size of the cubes that the machine makes. IT IS LOUD. When the ice cubes fall, they make a lot of noise due to their large size. In a home, this is not a good thing since people sleep here."
