Steak knives are usually not found on the tabletop when a guest is seated. Rather they are brought out with the ordered steak or other piece of meat signifying that the customer will have to do a little work to enjoy their meal. The handle material, blade edge and blade tip are all important considerations when searching for the right knife. Most steak knives
have four to five inch long blades. They can be either serrated or straight edge and have a pointed or rounded tip. Pointed tip blades are ideal for piercing food while cutting it, and serrated edges slice tough meats easier and require less maintenance. Steak knives can have either wood, plastic or metal handles. Metal and plastic handles tend to be the most durable, but some people think plastic looks cheap. Metal handles will be cold to the touch and may be hard to grip. A wood handle provides a classy look and warm feel. However, repeated runs through the dish machine may eventually crack the handle. Some manufacturers also offer rubber handled knives for a more comfortable, slip-free grip.
