Stainless steel is a mixture of different metals and has the ability to resist corrosion. However, if the outer layer becomes scratched, even stainless steel can rust. When washing your stainless steel cookware, avoid abrasive chemicals and cleaning pads. Use only mild detergents and wash cloths, vinyl brushes or sponges. For tough, caked-on food, try filling the pan with water and bringing it to a boil to loosen up the grime.
To prevent scratching while the pan is in use, avoid using metal utensils that will scrape the inside of the pot or pan. Forks and knives used on stainless steel will cause deep scratches in the finish of the stainless material and cause it to corrode and rust much more quickly. When cooking, try using silicone or rubber utensils to keep the bottom of the pans from being scratched.
