Plastic Colanders

For an economical way to keep your fruits and veggies clean, consider using plastic colanders. They are not nearly as heavy duty as metal and will not last as longer, but they can be purchased in large quantities and still perform the same function of getting produce clean before it is served.

Whatever material you choose for a colander, it is important to always wash your produce with cold water and never hot or even warm water. this is recommended for several reasons. First, pipes and plumbing can become old and coated with rust. It will stay attached to the pipes until they are warmed. The hot water will cause the debris to break free from the plumbing a come out of the faucet, directly over the food you are washing.

Warm water also causes green to wilt fiercely. Running lettuce under hot or warm water for a few seconds can make it feel limp and weak. It has basically the same effect as lying them out on the counter for an entire day would have. To keep the produce crisp and green, wash it under cold water while tossing it so that it stays plump and not weighted down.
