When using gelatin in a dish, you can be certain that the dish will solidify nicely and, for the most part, it is an easy to use cooking ingredient. There are some tips and tricks that will help your gelatin desserts turn out just the way you always imagined. To prevent unflavored gelatin from clumping, it is best to mix it with a little bit of cold water for about three to five minutes before it is added to hot water. Once the desserts are done, place them in a sealed container to prevent them from forming a rubbery sheet over the surface of the Jell-O.
Be sure to measure the ingredients as you add them as too much sugar actually inhibits the gelatin from working. If you want a softer dessert, add more sugar. The firmness of Jell-O is also dependant upon the water-to-gelatin ratio used. If you want a thicker, more firm gelatin dessert, use less water. For softer more jiggly snacks, add more water to your mixture.
