When cooking up the sugar syrup for your next great sweet treat, be extremely careful when handling the syrup. Sugar may be sweet in all other instances, but it is an extremely nasty burn, in fact, many chefs refer to the substance as “edible napalm.” Because of the sticky nature of the melted sugar mixture, it is very hard to wash or rub off the skin once it comes in contact with it. Consequentially, the sugar continues to burn long after it has come into contact with the skin.
If you do get a sugar burn, it is best to cool the sugar itself before treating the burn since it will not come off quickly. Grab an ice cube from the freezer and place it directly on the sugar. While doing this, have a coworker or friend fill up a bowl of ice cold water and then stick your hand in the bowl for a few minutes. This should properly cool the sugar and then you can focus on removing it once cool. After the sugar is finally removed, treat the burn with aloe vera.
