The compressors on solid door freezers can be located on either the top or bottom of the machine. There are benefits and drawbacks to each position. Top-mounted compressors keep all of the hot air above the cold cabinet. Whereas with bottom-mount, every time the door is open, some hot air could blow into the cabinet. However, with the compressor on the bottom, employees will not have to bend over as far to reach the bottom shelf. This could reduce strain and sprain injuries.
Most commercial kitchens account for every square inch of space and try to find the biggest unit to fit the available area. However, you will want to make sure there is at least two to three inches of clearance on each side and on the back of the unit. The clearance is necessary to allow proper air flow to keep the refrigeration coils properly cooled. If the airflow is obstructed, the unit will have to work harder which will burn out the compressor.
