The sink opening diameter indicates the top of the drain, the part that attaches to the sink. You will want to check the sink opening diameter on your sink and make sure it is the same measurement as the drain. The drain opening diameter indicates the other opening on the drain, where the water will flow out. This tells you how big the drain pipe needs to be.
Many residential bathtubs and sinks come with a an overflow outlet. This is the hole towards the faucet that allows water to flow out if the level rises too high. Lever drains have the same feature available for use on multi-compartment foodservice sinks. An extra hole on the back of the drain allows the plumber to pipe an overflow outlet to the sink bowl. If you do not have any immediate necessity for the drain overflow, they also come with a cap to block-up the hole.
