Bread and butter plates are small plates approximately six inches wide that can be used for holding fresh bread and butter from a basket on the table. Many restaurants that offer complimentary bread place bread plates on the dining tables at the beginning of customers’ dining experience, so that they can have something to munch on in the mean time.
For many Italian, French and other European restaurants, offering free bread at the table is a given. But offering freshly baked bread without the proper plate for it creates a mess of crumbs at the table. Invest in small, five to six inch plates that can be set at the table before your customers or guests even arrive. They are small enough so that they don’t crowd the table or take up too much space in the dishwasher. In fact, they are the perfect size for a slice of French bread, a roll or breadsticks.
