Keep in mind that if you choose to serve food in a wicker basket, you must use cloth or paper to line the basket. This is because the wicker models cannot be put through a dishwasher or cleaned with harsh sanitizers, so they cannot be used as a food contact surface in a restaurant.
Other popular choices for bread baskets include wire baskets, plastic faux-weave models, and wrought iron baskets. Some of these materials can actually be put in a commercial warewasher, making them perfect for restaurants or catering operations that want to put food directly in the basket. However, adding a cloth liner to the basket is not just more sanitary, it also lends it a charming look.
