Knock Boxes

On your next visit to your favorite coffee shop or cafe take a moment to listen to the background sounds. Almost certainly you will notice the thump of the portafilter being "knocked" against the knock box in order to remove the used espresso grounds. Knock boxes are an often overlooked, yet important component in the layout and functionality of the espresso bar. The portafilter is rapped against the sturdy knock box in order to dislodge the used espresso grounds. Knock boxes generally feature a padded crossbar which actually absorbs most of the blow. Knock boxes are available in a variety of materials including wood, metal and even some acrylic options. While some drop-in knock chutes require a cut out in the counter, others feature padded feet to keep the knock box stable on the counter. The volume of your operation will determine which type of knock box is best, however it is recommended that cut outs for drop-in knock chutes not be made until the box has been received and measured.
