Despite the fact that they are considered a type of rocks glass, these old fashioned glasses have much more to feature than straight liquor served over ice. Contrary to popular belief, these glasses are actually cocktail glasses and do not gather its name from its traditional or classic look.

This cocktail is traditionally made from muddling dissolved sugar with bitters and then adding a dash of spirits such as whiskey or brandy. The old fashioned cocktail also has some variations including those that use gin instead of whiskey. Typically these cocktail glasses are finished off with a beautiful garnish of a maraschino cherry and an orange slice.
The Old Fashioned cocktail is noted as potentially being the first drink to actually be called a cocktail. It is traditionally served in an eight to twelve ounce glass, most notably called old fashioned glasses. This glass is essentially the same thing as a rocks glass, sometimes with a thick, heavy base.
