Saving energy dollars begins with choosing the right equipment. Learn which energy-smart features can save you the most money and help you to conserve electricity or gas.

Look for more insulation.

Because insulated cabinets keep their heat better, they are less expensive to operate when compared to a non-insulated model. According to PG&L's Food Technology Service Center, you can reduce your energy bill by approximately $430 per year!

Choose thermoelectric technology.

Cabinets that run on this technology are less expensive to operate and have the ability to run quietly on 110V, allowing them to be plugged in anywhere.

Go with electronic control systems.

With electronic controls, a kitchen operator can monitor up to six, independent timers for each compartment. By using heat only when and where you need it, you waste less energy and earn more money.

Select magnetic door gaskets.

This feature provides a better seal on your heated cabinet, making it more effective at retaining heat. Stop wasting energy and keep heat where it belongs: in the cabinet.

Look for auto door closers.

Another great feature for helping your cabinet retain heat.

Consider Dutch doors.

These are good for heat retention. Instead of opening the whole cabinet, you just open up a section of it.

By replacing 28 inefficient hot-food holding cabinets with 32, ENERGY STAR qualified units, the Oregon Convention Center will save money, energy, and increase its overall kitchen capacity. In the end, over 200,000 kWh will be saved annually because of the replacement of old and inefficient equipment with new ENERGY STAR qualified commercial food-service equipment. This translates into over $12,000 per year in savings!
