ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)
Durable plastic used to make lightweight molded products. It has many uses within the food service industry because it is easy to clean. Also used as interior liners by some refrigeration manufacturers due to its durability and insulating properties.

Activated carbon
Chemical filtration method that uses carbon to pull contaminants out of the water in ice machines by absorbing them.

Adaptive defrost
Only runs defrost mode when needed, as opposed to timed defrost that runs at set times even if refrigerator doesn't need defrosting.

Aeration bowls
Bowls under certain Vulcan burners that dip below the top grate allowing for airflow under the burner.

All-purpose fryers
Affordable, versatile fryers that cook all varieties of deep fried foods.

Air-cooled
Air is used to draw heat off of the ice machine's condenser and change vaporous refrigerant into liquid.

Air curtain
A wall of cold air that cascades across the opening of open-air merchandisers and some door model refrigerators.

Air dashpot
This component works as a shock absorber for a scale; when an object is placed onto the scale it will not bounce up and down erratically.

Air gap
A warewashing backflow prevention method that uses an open space between the water inlet and receptacle being filled. Water inlet does not contact water in receptacle at any time.

Alligator claw
Component built in on certain can openers that safely deposits can tops into a receptacle.

Aluminum black anodized heating
Type of heat found in some overhead warmers that uses corrosion resistant aluminum that has been colored black to increase the radiant heat produced.

Anodized aluminum
Aluminum with an oxidized surface, anodized aluminum is one of the hardest known substances, second only to the diamond.

Anti-microbial
A term given to any chemical compound that can kill or suppress the growth of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites.

Automatic basket lifts
Computer controlled lifts that remove the baskets from the fry oil at a preset time.

Automatic Water Fill
The feature of select steamer models that removes the need to monitor water levels of the steam generators and boilers.
